BioAstra Crew-1
Building the Foundations of Off-Planet Healthcare
Throughout Summer 2023, the inaugural BioAstra Crew-1 research mission was conducted.
Crew-1 brought together an outstanding group of students passionate about advancing human health in space. The program featured five undergraduate students from prestigious institutions such as Cornell University and Columbia University, alongside an exceptional high school student. Together, these young researchers delved deep into the complexities of space medicine, contributing significantly to our collective understanding.
Crew-1 engaged in rigorous research across four key areas essential to space medicine:
Medical Events in Space: Investigating past incidents and medical emergencies to better prepare for future missions.
Medicine: Exploring the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications in microgravity and their implications on astronaut health.
Hardware: Assessing the medical equipment needed for space travel, ensuring reliability and effectiveness in zero-gravity conditions.
Biological Measurements from Spaceflight: Analyzing biological data obtained from previous spaceflights to understand the physiological impacts of space travel.
Building a Space Medicine Knowledgebase: The overarching goal of the Crew-1 Mission was to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive space medicine knowledgebase. This digital repository aims to consolidate valuable information, research findings, and insights, ultimately serving as a go-to medical information network.
A Step Towards the Future Crew-1 marked the beginning of an exciting journey in space medicine research. We are immensely proud of the contributions made by our research crew and look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence and innovation in future iterations of our BioAstra Crew Missions.
